Read your run chart

Paste your data. See your chart and which run chart rules signal a change.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent or saved.

Paste or type one number per line, or separate numbers with commas or spaces. Use a period for decimals, and leave out thousands separators (write 1200, not 1,200). You can paste a column from a spreadsheet.

How this tool works

A run chart plots your data in time order with a median line. The tool checks three standard run chart rules: a shift (6 or more points in a row on one side of the median, or 8 or more when the chart has 20 or more points), a trend (5 or more points in a row going up or down, or 6 or more when the chart has 20 or more points), and whether the number of runs is unusually low or high for the number of points. Points on the median, and repeated values within a trend, are skipped rather than counted, following common practice. The fourth rule, an astronomical point, needs your judgment. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent or saved.

A run chart helps you see whether a process changed. It isn't a test of whether your project caused the change. Your faculty advisor can help you decide how to present and interpret your chart.
