Needs Assessment & Instrument Development

Needs assessment projects find out what a group needs, often through a survey. Some also build a new instrument. Both depend on asking the right people the right questions, and on being honest about who answered and what the instrument can show.

Common mistakes for this type

  • Writing a new survey when a published instrument already measures the same thing.
  • Ignoring a low response rate or a sample that doesn't represent the group.
  • Calling an instrument "validated" after only a small pilot or a single reliability coefficient.
